"Trick or Trap!" is the first Halloween special of the Ol' Bum-Bum animated series.

Official Description[]

Haliegh and her friends visit a pumpkin patch and prepare to celebrate the holiday with a big Halloween bash! But something goes terribly wrong at the party, and the girls are forced to find an alternative to their big plans. - Official Description

Plot[]

It is October 29th, and Haliegh Kelly Myorgan and her friends are onboard a Crosstown Public Transit bus taking them to the Crosstown Fall Festival. Also onboard the bus is a man named Alphonze Consistico and another man. When Haliegh begins to sing "The Wheels on the Bus", the man yells at her to stop, only to have the other riders to chime in and start singing an even more annoying version of the song. The man then proceeds to jump out the window as a form of escape, but he ends up getting killed by an oncoming car.

The girls then arrive at the pumpkin patch. The admission woman is sitting atop the admission booth's counter, exposing her tattoos and pants that have memorials for each of her eight husbands that she most likely killed. The woman then inquires about how many are in Haliegh's party, which she struggles to count. After she tells her there are eleven children, the woman asks what Haliegh is smuggling in her pants, who Haliegh says is "Ol' Bum-Bum", or "her bottom". The admission totals at $33 for everyone. Haliegh insists on paying admission, even though Sally offered to pay.

The first thing that the girls do inside the festival is head towards Bela's Fortune Telling tent, based on Susan's suggestion to go. Inside, each of the kids is given a basic fortune that would not provide any insight on the future, such as the fact Annie would blink, or that Linda would breathe. When it becomes Susan's turn, Bela reads her palms, and finds out that she is going to be the next victim, as he is a werewolf.

Outside of the tent, the girls who already got their fortunes told wait for Susan, and talk to Larry Talbot, who is standing around with Gwen and Jenny. After conversing a short while, Susan's scream is heard coming from inside the tent, and a gunshot follows directly afterwards. Inside, she is seen with a bite on her shoulder and a revolver in her hand. She tells her friends that Bela transformed into a werewolf, but that she was saved by the fact that she always carries a silver bullet.

The next stop is the bobbing for apples stand. Susan has been bandaged up, and she has replaced her old shirt with a new Crosstown Fall Festival t-shirt. Linda is first in line to bob, but she is disgusted to the point of vomiting upon finding out that the water hasn't been changed for three weeks. According to Bobby, there had been cases of bubonic plague, malaria, and meningitis.

A man with a shaved head in an orange jumpsuit then takes his turn bobbing for apples. He manages to grab one, but it slips out of his mouth and falls back in. It is then revealed that he is a convict, as he states he believes the game has been rigged so prisoners can't win.

Now it is Annie's turn. She begins to feel a sneeze coming on, and she let's it go into the water in the bucket. Lisa, angered, hits her since she was going next. In too much pain to care, Annie goes off to the side with Linda and Mellissa. Lisa then states she is no longer interested in bobbing, and lets Haliegh proceed. Sally then mentions there were actually some good apples, and all of the other girls eat their fruit.

When it comes time for Haliegh to go up, she explains she is not hungry, but "he" is. She unzips her pants and pulls them off, allowing Ol' Bum-Bum to bob in the water. A crunching sound is heard, and Christine realizes that he got his apple, causing her to pass out.

Up next is the hay ride, where all of the girls are on one side while a group of questionable looking individuals is on the other. The odd group is composed of a man with a disfiguring disease, a maniacal looking clown, a gothic woman, a large woman, and Rick Grimes. The man with the disease mentions that his condition is only contagious when someone comes in contact with his saliva, then he takes a bite into a pristine apple.

Sally worries about where he got the apple, and he says he got it bobbing for apples 20 minutes ago. Rick Grimes then says they are all infected with the man's condition. Once they arrive at the pumpkin patch, each of the girls picks out a pumpkin with features that somehow resemble them as a person. Haliegh then pays the total of $55 for all eleven pumpkins. Once the transaction is finished, they go home on the Crosstown bus.

Back at Haliegh's house, the girls have pieces of paper where they are designing different pumpkin carving ideas. An artist, Mellissa calls her in-depth Mona Lisa carving idea a "quick sketch". Linda's is a series of complex algebraic equations; Amanda's is a chef hat; Susan's is a sheet of various cryptid creatures such as sasquatch and Nessie; Haliegh's are eclectic and distracted sketches; Anna has an upside down face. Haliegh then proclaims that she is going to throw a Halloween party, leaving the group to rejoice with odd tongue sounds. They all go home to prepare for the party.

When it's finally time for the party, a great number of guests, including school staff, the Dare Club, and a few other friends aside from the girls, are seen in Haliegh's living and dining rooms. After the Addams Family theme stops playing, a new tune begins (the Shaun of the Dead theme), causing Ms. Nippu to start to dance.

Haliegh pulls the plug on the boombox to announce it is time to watch "It's the Grande Squash, Chuck Beige!". Afterwards, they light up their pumpkins and put them on the front porch. However, a member of the Dare Club locks the girls outside and they continue to party inside without them. Anna suggests they go to a motel that she knows is located up the road a short ways, and has seen reviews for it on IMDB - the Bates Motel. They arrive, and are greeted by Norman Bates, who is donning a sweater with his name on it.

Trivia[]

  • As predicted, the episode became the longest of the specials, running at eighteen minutes, thirty-three seconds.
  • The title card is a carved pumpkin.
  • It is 11:21 AM on October 29th, 2013 when the girls are on their way to the Crosstown Fall Festival.
  • The tagline of Crosstown Public Transit is "Just Hope You Don't Crash", and it denotes "Safe Journeys Not Guaranteed".
  • Haliegh sings "the Wheels on the Bus" on their way to the festival in order to get into the Halloween spirit. It is unknown why she selects the song, though, as it has no association with Halloween whatsoever. In the second round of singing, everyone onboard the bus sings the song except for the suicidal bus passenger.
  • There are only two passengers onboard that are not members of the Cutie Girlz: the suicidal bus rider and Alphonze Consistico.
  • The logo of the bus only blinks when Haliegh states that she is getting into the Halloween spirit.
  • When the rider jumps out the window, he moves horizontally towards the car behind the bus, but he manages to keep standing the entire time.
  • The pumpkin seen in the fall festival disappears when the angle changes to face the admissions booth.
  • There is a tent at the fall festival that is called "Silly Things to Do With Blood".
  • The admission woman was never given any hands during animation. This was not intended.
    • She has eight known previous husbands: Steven, Roy, Vlad, Svenson, Juan, Jose, Bet-moso, and Ivan
  • The admission rates are "$5 for jerks" and "$3 for brats".
  • When Haliegh counts how many people are in her group on her fingers, her hand has a face. It also manages to grow several fingers.
  • It costs $33 for all eleven girls, indicating that all eleven of them had the "brat" rate.
  • Charlie Brown's Christmas tree can be seen outside of Bela's Fortune Telling tent. It is unknown why it is there, and is more or less an Easter Egg.
  • It is Susan who suggests going to see Bela. Ironically, she is the one who is bitten and has to kill Bela.
  • The music playing during the psychic reading sequence is from the PlayStation video game of Disney's The Emperor's New Groove.
  • Bela made several basic readings. They were: Linda would breath in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide, Haliegh would dine on cheese at a party, Annie would blink, Lisa would grow a furry pink unibrow out of sheet anger, Mellissa wouldn't eat lettuce because she was allergic (though she is not), and Anna would wear a costume in two days (which would be Halloween).
  • For an unknown reason, Susan is the only one of the group to have to show her palms to Bela.
    • She shows him her palm trees first.
  • Rather than a pentagram, Bela sees "this chick is next" in the palm of Susan's hand.
  • The Psycho shower music is used twice during the episode:
    • It is first used when Bela sees that Susan is his next victim.
  • Susan says she carries a silver bullet at all times for "when duty calls". Her weapon of choice is a revolver.
    • It is later used in the parody of the shower scene at the Bates Motel.
  • While the girls are at the Bates Motel, Haliegh takes a hot shower. The scene is cut as close as possible to the original Psycho.
  • Several of the original scenes planned had to be bailed because of the lengthyness of the script.
  • Throughout the episode, images of Norman Bates from Psycho can be seen several times.
    • He first appears as the logo for Crosstown Public Transit on the side of the bus.
    • His head is then seen inside of the same bus.
    • Later, he portrays "Roy" and "Steven", the former husbands of the admission woman. He is seen as tattoos on her body.
    • Eventually, the character Norman Bates appears in the episode as himself.
  • The episode features the most cameos, with a total of 8: Bela (The Wolfman), Larry Talbot (The Wolfman), Gwen (The Wolfman), Jenny (The Wolfman), Rick Grimes (The Walking Dead), Daryl Dixon (The Walking Dead), Dracula (Dracula), and the Invisible Man (The Invisible Man).
  • The episode currently has the highest death toll at three: the man on the bus, Bela, and Norman Bates. Each of the three had a different type of death: suicide, "murder", and accident.
  • Haliegh says that Shadow Kid and N.O. Waye have their "chatterkins ghost outfits" on. It is unknown what this means, but it has to do with both of the children wearing ghost-themed outfits.

Goofs[]

  • When the girls arrive at the festival, there is a clear shot of the admission booth being in front of a pumpkin-shaped tunnel. However, when they are next to the admission booth, there is a tent that can be seen that says "Silly Things to Do with Food". This may be disregarded as a goof, however, as it is possible that the tent is being seen through the tunnel. Never the less, the tunnel isn't even visible.
  • While getting her fortune told, Susan claims that she "feels like Larry Talbot" from The Wolfman. However, in the movie, Larry never gets his fortune told. The correct exclaimation would have been "I feel like Jenny from the Wolfman!".
  • During the scene where Susan transforms into a werewolf, in the part where Lisa says 'Werewolves aren't real', Susan's arm can be seen without brown fur.

Deleted Scenes[]

The episode was going to be significantly longer, but several scenes had to be bailed out due to time constraints. If the scenes had not been omitted, the episode would have run close to thirty minutes.

The Slides at Crosstown Fall Festival[]

A scene involving Haliegh and her friends going on the slides at the Crosstown Fall Festival was hesitantly cut from the final version. It revolved around Haliegh getting stuck going down the slide, and complaining that Ol' Bum-Bum couldn't breathe.

Appearances[]

  • Bela (First appearance)
  • Chuck Beige (First appearance)
